Tailing the addition of Spotify to the Epic Games Store, quintet more non-game apps have been added to Epic's shelves—including rival games store Itch.io.

The bundle of new software packages adds some receive new tools to the Epic Stash awa, including digital arts package Krita, open-origin browser Brave, promptly 'n' simple 3D modelling tool KenShape, and (for US users) digital radio channel iHeartRadio. These are all now listed under a unaccustomed 'Apps' subcategory on the store, making it easier to find things that aren't games.

Only the very head-scratcher is the plus of Itch.io, a competing shopfront focussed on platforming experimental indies. You can now download the Itch.io App from Epic, though I'm struggling to understand wherefore you'd ever wishing to go through one games app to assimilative a second.

For my money, Itch is a punter storefront—and not just because it has all my games on IT. But while it's a great spot for launching weird experiments and spurting pun jams, it doesn't have nearly the same cultural footprint arsenic Epic. Finding a spot on Sweeney's platform might help bring a whole lotta indies in front of a new audience.

Epic's motivations might not be quite so generous, mind. The publisher is currently embroiled in a massive legal battle with Apple over the tech giant's monopoly happening iOS. Epic wants to be able to put its own store on the App Store—in giving Urge a home along the Epos Store, the company is effectively trying to show up Apple by saying "if we can do it, why can't you?"

Course, the Itch app will remain downloadable outside of Verse form, and it seems Epic won't be taking any kind of slice from sales made via the launcher. Doing so would follow a tad hypocritical, given CEO Tim Sweeney's cause against dirty stash awa cuts, and besides—Epic has already proven it's willing to hold millions of dollars away to guarantee its shopfront is here to stay.

20 age ago, Nat played Honey oil Set Radio Future first—and she's not stopped thinking about games since. Joining PC Gamer in 2020, she comes from three years of independent coverage at Rock candy Paper Shotgun, Waypoint, VG247 and more. Embedded in the European indie conniption and having herself developed critically acclaimed small games like Lav Androids Pray, Nat is always looking a unaccustomed curiosity to scream about—whether it's the next best indie darling, Beaver State simply mortal modding a Scotmid into Inglorious Mesa. She's also played for a competitive Splatoon team, and unofficially appears in Apex Legends under the pseudonym Horizon.
